Unique Tattoo Flash - Polynesian Arm Tattoos

Tattooing is a widely practiced method of body decoration in which markings such as signs, symbols, and letters are applied to the body by puncturing the skin's outer layer and inserting color into it. Tattooing is common among certain tribal groups in Taiwan, the Philippines, Borneo, Africa, North America, South America, Mesoamerica, Europe, Japan, Cambodia, New Zealand, and Micronesia. It was also widespread among Polynesian peoples. Polynesian tattoos are an ancient art that has been receiving a lot of attention in modern times. Look around you, and you will notice people wearing Polynesian arm tattoos as a fashion statement or form of self-expression.

Polynesian tattoos are popular today even among non-Polynesians who simply want to embrace Polynesian culture or design. But then again, as mentioned, the Polynesian Islands have a long history of tattooing.

Polynesian people had tattoos for several reasons. For one, getting the first tattoo marks the transition between childhood and adulthood. Thus, tattooing represents a rite of passage, as well as it represents social status and rank. Tattoos increased a man's sexual attractiveness, and offered protection to the wearer. Lastly, tattoos symbolized courage. The tattoo process was very painful and a lot of perseverance was needed to endure the long tattoo sessions.

But even if true Polynesian tattoos mean a traditional and generally painful tattooing process, Polynesian designs are easy to incorporate into a modern tattoo. Today, the most well-know of the Polynesian tattoos is the Maori tattoo, which consists of intricate spirals that cover the entire face, legs, and buttocks for men and curved designs that cover the chin for women. Other Polynesian tattoos are similarly abstract in design but loaded with cultural significance

Again, tattoos held different meanings for different tribes. For the Polynesians, tattoos such as Polynesian arm tattoos are a symbol of manhood, social status and rank, protection, and courage.
