Natalie Portman was named best actress for Black Swan at the Golden Globes tonight as The Social Network scooped trophy for best film.

Pregnant Portman thanked her parents and fiancé Benjamin Millepied as she made her acceptance speech for her trophy, which honoured her portrayal of a tortured ballerina in the critically acclaimed movie.

After giving a nod to her parents for 'bringing me into this world', the 29-year-old added: 'And thank you to Benjamin for helping me to bring more creation into the world'.

Millepied, who choreographed the movie, and Portman met on set while filming last year.

Colin Firth won the best actor gong for The King's Speech for his portrayal of King George VI.

Glee was also a big winner of the night with three awards and The Fighter also performed well with nods to Christian Bale and co-star Melissa Leo for best supporting actor and actress.

Chris Colfer won the best supporting actor Golden Globe for his role as the camp pupil in Glee while co-star Jane Lynch was honoured for her role as the sadistic coach Sue Sylvester.

Lead-acting honors for the Globes' musical or comedy categories went to Annette Bening for the lesbian-family story The Kids Are All Right and Paul Giamatti for the curmudgeon tale Barney's Version.

Best performance by an actor in a TV drama series went to Steve Buscemi for the HBO gangster series Boardwalk Empire which will be shown On the new Sky Atlantic channel in the Spring.

Award for best TV drama series went to the very same Boardwalk Empire, beating The Good Wife and Mad Men.

Justin Beiber, the teen pop sensation, co-presented the best animated film along with another child sensation Hailee Steinfeld, star of the film True Grit, to the Disney -Pixar film Toy Story 3.

Al Pacino took the Golden Globe, and a standing ovation, for best performance by an actor in a film made for TV in You Don't Know Jack.

Having earlier introduced Bruce Willis as 'Ashton Kutcher's dad', he then went for Robert Downey Jr.

He started by listing his film credits but said Downey would be better known for his stays at ' the Betty Ford Clinic and the facility of the Los Angeles jail'.

When he came on stage Downey commented that it was 'mean spirited'.

Bening touchingly acknowledged her husband by saying she wanted to thank 'the 1962 winner of the most promising actor Golden Globe, my husband Warren Beatty'.

Michael Douglas and his wife Catherine Zeta Jones were led through a new empty ballroom at the Beverly Hilton so they could slip away with the minimum of fuss.

'No late nights', Douglas said to the Daily Mail as he left the ceremony.

The MailOnline shook hands with him, for the second time of the night, and while he's getting better the actor still seemed frail.

But as they were leaving the Beverly Hilton Michael Douglas and his wife were persuaded to stop by the joint party for The King's Speech and The Fighter.

The couple sat on a leather sofa in a quieter corner of the sprawling marquee erected at the back of the hotel.
